The BODMAS rule can be described as an abbreviation used to recall the order of operations that we must use when solving equations in math. It is a reference to B means Brackets means an order of power of root D means Division M – means Multiplication A means Addition and S means Subtraction.

 It is a sign that expressions that contain multiple operators must be reduced by dividing them from right to left in this manner only. 

First, we must solve brackets, then power or roots and finally the division of or multiplying (whichever is first onto the left of the equation) before subtraction or addition depending on which is from the left side.

For this class, we’ll be studying the BODMAS rule that helps solve arithmetic expressions that include numerous operations, such as subtraction multiplication (x), division (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (x) and division (/), and brackets ( ).

Now that you know the basics, let’s answer the question, “what is the BODMAS rule?”

What is BODMAS?

Also often referred to as the sequence of operation, BODMAS refers to a set of instructions to carry out operations within an arithmetic formula. Math is about logic, and a set of standard rules can make our calculations much easier. Therefore, BODMAS is one of the rules that are standard for simplifying equations with multiple operators.

What Is PEMDAS?

PEMDAS is an order of operations that is used in math to help efficiently with complicated calculations. It states that we begin working on any arithmetic equation by solving the equations written in brackets or parentheses. Then we reduce exponential terms and then move on to division and multiplication. Finally, we solve the problem by solving subtraction and addition operations.

In arithmetic, a statement or equation has two elements:

  • Operators
  • Numbers

Operators or Operations

Operators are characters that join two numbers, resulting in an equation or expression. Mathematically, some of the commonly used operators are Addition (+), Subtraction (-), Multiplication (x) and Division (/). 

Finding the correct answer is relatively easy for mathematical equations or expressions that just one operator is in play. If there are multiple operators, finding the solution is a little more challenging!

Numbers

The mathematical value of numbers is used to count quantities and also for calculations. There are various categories of numbers in math numbers, such as the types of natural numbers, full numbers, real numbers, integers, complex numbers and imaginary numbers, rational numbers, Irrational numbers,  and imaginary numbers.

BODMAS Rule Meaning and Definition

BODMAS rule is used to analyse mathematical expressions and handle complex calculations in a simpler and more standard manner.

Example of how to Use BODMAS?

In accordance with the BODMAS rule, to solve any mathematical equation first, we must find the words enclosed in brackets. We proceed to the next operation in the same manner as previously mentioned.

Following the sequence of operations within the BODMAS rule always yields an answer that is 100% correct. Simplifying the meaning of words inside brackets can be performed in a direct manner. 

This means that we can carry out the operations within the bracket according to the sequence of division, multiplication, subtraction, and addition. If there are several brackets in an expression, similar types of brackets could be solved in a single step.

Here’s a practical example:

13 + (4+3) – (2 x 4)

13+ 7 – 8

20-8

=12

When to Use BODMAS?

BODMAS is followed to solve more than one mathematical equation. There is a set of specific rules to be observed when applying the BODMAS method. This provides a design to generate an individual answer to each mathematical formula.

To be followed:

If there’s a bracket, it is possible to open the bracket and then add or subtract the numbers. A + (b + c) = a + b + C (b + c), a + (b + C) = A + B – C.

If there’s a term that is outside of the bracket, then multiply the outside term by each term in the bracket. a(b + c) = ab + ac.

In case there is a negative symbol you can simply open the bracket, add the negative sign to every bracket word. A + (b + c) = A – B – C.

Easy Ways to Remember the BODMAS Rule

Simple rules for remembering the BODMAS rule are given below: BODMAS rules are as follows:

First, simplify the brackets.

Solve all exponential terms.

Perform multiplication or division (go in a row from right to left)

Subtract or add (go-between left and right)

Common Errors While Using the BODMAS Rule

It is possible to make common mistakes when applying to the BODMAS rule to reduce the complexity of expressions. These errors are highlighted down there:

The existence of multiple brackets can confuse and, as a result, we could end up with the wrong answer. Therefore, if there is more than one bracket inside an expression, all of the identical brackets can be solved simultaneously.

A mistake can be found in certain situations due to an ignorance of subtraction and the addition of integers. For instance the equation 1-3 + 4 = 1-7 = -6. If you write 6 over there, it would be wrong.

Other mistakes can also happen, leading to an incorrect solution, ,such as 1-3 + 4 = -2 + 4 = 2. In this case, we subtracted first, which went against the BODMAS rule.

A mistake is thinking that division has more precedence over multiplication while addition is more critical than subtraction. Following this rule in selecting these operations can help you determine the correct answer.

The division and the multiplication operations are same-level operations that need to be done in left-to-right order (whichever occurs first within the equation). The same for subtraction and addition are operations of the same level that must be completed following division and multiplication.

Suppose one attempt to solve division first before multiplying (which happens to be on the right side of the division operation) since D is before M in BODMAS. In that case, they may be getting the wrong answer.

Conclusion

Let’s conclude by knowing What the Order of Operations is. It is the one you employ to solve math equations, such as parentheses, division, exponents, multiplication subtraction, addition. Every expression should be simplified according to this order. 

There is one exception: multiplication and division may be done simultaneously; you can divide before multiplying, as the same is true for subtraction and addition. But, division and multiplication must be completed before subtraction and addition. This acronym PEMDAS is frequently used to refer to this order.

That’s all under the “vital considerations” of BODMAS, and keeping these in mind, solving the toughest sums will also seem easy!
