Played since 1960, the Club World Cup has had its format changed several times. The current gameplay mode has been in place since 2005, but there has already been:
- a round-trip
- best-of-three
- single-game decision
Apart from that, there is even a new format that is shelved due to the new coronavirus pandemic (every four years, with more teams, and which was scheduled to debut in 2021). You can know more about it here.

Over these several years of competition, we’ve seen many teams lift this cup. The Europeans are certainly the ones who reign in the Club World Cup, especially in recent years.

There are 5 clubs that have managed to lift the cup in this competition 3 times. Let’s see a little bit about them here.
Sao Paulo
The Brazilian team with the most Club World Cup titles. Sao Paulo already started their history in the competition with two trophies in a row, when the Toyota Cup still existed, lifting the cup in 1992 and also in 1993.
Then, in the first year of the competition’s new format (in 2005), when they had top scorer Rogerio Ceni, they achieved their third achievement.
Penarol
The only Uruguayan team that made history in the competition, despite all their titles having taken place in the last century.
The first time the Penarol team lifted the cup was in 1961, in the second year of the Intercontinental Cup. The last title was in the Toyota Cup, in 1982.
Inter Milan
With 3 titles, Inter Milan is among the biggest winners of the tournament.
Although their first titles were in the Intercontinental Cup (in 1964 and 65), the last one was won in 2010. On that occasion, they beat Mazembe, from Congo, by 3-0.
Boca Juniors
Boca Juniors is the most successful club in Argentina in this competition, which makes sense, as it is a team with a lot of tradition in the country and also in the South American continent.
The first conquest came in 1977. The second, at the turn of the century, in the year 2000. And the last time was in 2003, against AC Milan. 4 years later, they would reach the final once more and lose to the Italian team.
Barcelona
Given the power of Barcelona for many years in European football, one can imagine that he had more titles in this competition. But the team from Catalonia raised the cup 3 times, and all of them in this century.
The first cup came in 2009, followed by 2011 and then 2015. They could have won their first title earlier, in 2006, but lost the final to Brazil’s Internacional by 1-0.
4 Titles of the FIFA Club World Cup
We have two clubs that achieved this feat, let’s go to them.
Bayern Munich
The German team managed to improve their place on the FIFA Club World Cup winners list last year by beating Tigers 1-0.
In addition, Bayern also won the titles in 1976, 2001 and 2013.
AC Milan
With 1 more title than their city rivals, AC Milan is the Italian’s biggest winner of this competition. Unfortunately, they haven’t won it for over 10 years now.
The first title was in 1969, followed by two in a row conquests in 1989 and 1990. The last title in the competition was in 2007, where they beat Boca Juniors.
7 Titles of the FIFA Club World Cup
Only one team achieved such a feat and it was Real Madrid, from Spain. The first came in 1960, the first year of club competitions organized by FIFA.
It took 38 years for the Merengue team to get their second title, coming only in 98. Then they lifted the cup in 2002.
And then came the moment of his hegemony in the competition. The fourth came in 2014 and then came three titles in a row, in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Really, a real amazing achievement from Real Madrid.
