An angle is formed when two rays of line intersect at a point. These rays share a common point, also called the vertex of that angle. In the study of angles, there are some special angles, and 180 degrees is one such special angle. It is around this value the definition of a specific kind of pair of angles called supplementary angles comes into the picture.
Geometry introduces us to the study of measuring and finding angles. Hence to carry out this process accurately, the basics of different kinds of angles and how to draw them should be learned. Math worksheets play a very important role in learning these basic concepts in detail and effectively. Many websites, such as Cuemath, offer free worksheets on many math topics.
Also, they are free to download and can be printed with ease. Depending on the age of the child, there are a variety of worksheets to choose from based on the understanding level of the child. They are made interactive and engaging so that the students find them interesting to follow. Like the seventh-grade students can find the 7th grade math worksheets useful for strengthening their geometry concepts.
We often hear qualitative words like straight, tilted, lying down, etc. It’s a commonly occurring phenomenon in the natural world that two lines or two planes are not always aligned 100 percent with each other. The difference in their orientation is measured using a specific parameter in mathematics which is called the ‘Angle,’ and the magnitude of its value is measured in a unit called ‘Degrees.’
If we imagine the two rays making an angle to be exactly opposite in orientation, then they would form a 180-degree angle in between, and the two rays would look like one straight line. This is where the importance of 180 as a value comes in, as this is the angle which the seemingly straight line is making. To be noted, both 180 degrees and 0 degrees would look to be similar in a diagram, but it has to be noted that it is a ray, and hence the direction is important.
So to cover up the concept of supplementary angles in simple terms, it would be when two angles add to 180 degrees, they are called supplementary. They do not necessarily be adjacent angles.
Angle 1 + Angle 2 = 1800
Examples are : 900 + 900 = 1800 or 1600 + 200 = 1800
Geometry also has some other kinds of angles like the sum of two angles which is equal to 90 degrees, are complementary angles. Vertical angles are formed when two lines intersect at X, the two opposite angles at the intersection point are called vertically opposite angles.
Supplementary and complementary angles play an important role in the study of geometry. We know about the congruent figures in geometry, which essentially means two similar figures which look like the mirror image of each other are congruent. The theorems related to complementary and supplementary angles help in the construction of postulates and proofs for the geometry problems.
In geometry, we have to deal with many quadrilaterals, and essentially the majority of these quadrilaterals have parallel lines, hence let us have a look at parallel lines. The two horizontal straight parallel lines are cut by a third line called transversal, there would be eight angles formed, four at each intersection. Hence these eight angles formed will be either supplementary or congruent. The thing to note here is that the two interior angles which are on the same side would be supplementary, and also, two same side exterior angles would be supplementary.
