Considering that we adults spend more time in our bedrooms than any other room in the home, it is usually the space we neglect the most when it comes to decorating. This may be because we are asleep for most of the time we are in there, but even so, it’s a shame that this intimate personal space should go to waste, containing nothing more than a bed and a pile of dirty clothes! If we look back on our childhoods, we might recall that the bedroom was “my room” and represented the one place in the house where we could have some control over the decor and express ourselves, even if it was just a poster of a media or sports idol, a model plane hanging from the ceiling, or a collection of stuffed animals. We felt good being in our bedroom, and there is no reason we can’t reclaim that feeling as adults! Let’s take a look at some simple things you can do to make the bedroom yours again.
The Bed – Let’s start with the elephant in the room, the one piece of furniture that is non-negotiable, and takes up the most space! If your bed is beginning to be a bit too creaky, the mattress is lumpy, or if the whole thing is a size too large or too small for your current needs, consider replacing it with a new one that will help you sleep better and feel more comfortable hanging out in or on. If the bed itself is sound, then switch out that old bedding for some new scientifically designed pillows that can help you sleep, along with some cosy Quilt Covers in eye-pleasing colours and patterns. Your bed will look and feel so good you will find yourself lounging around on it even when it’s not bedtime!
The Paint – For those periods where the light is turned on and you can see it, the room’s colour has a definite effect on its mood. The old ‘blue for boys, pink for girls’ trope withered away years ago, and either colour can be a nice choice regardless of your sex, blue for its cool, calming effect, and pink for its cosy, rosy glow. In general, dull shades of off-white have been the most common colour for bedrooms and should be, forgive the pun, put to bed! Don’t be afraid to try solid, dark colours, they can give the room a serious, thoughtful feel, or conversely, light, bright colours that can add some pep when the lights are on! Once you have your new paint picked out, you can use that same colour for bedding other furniture, and carpeting to give the room a sense of tidy cohesiveness.
The Floor – If you are lucky, you might have a nice, old-fashioned wood floor that is still in decent shape to enjoy. If so, throw a fluffy bedside rug on it to create a comfy place to warm your toes in the morning! If you happen to have a less inviting, modern flooring like cold, hard Formica, then go for a bigger throw rug, or add several of them around the room in strategic positions, islands of warmth and softness to keep the space cosy and inviting. Rugs and carpets are a great way to show off your creativity, go for colours and patterns that please your eyes as well as materials that please your bare feet! If you have a colour scheme going with the bedding and the paint, then the rugs are another way to continue the tradition.
Australia has an estimated 28 million bedrooms, just imagine every single one of them were as pleasant as yours is. It could pose a real problem, as everybody might just decide to close the door and stay in bed all day!
